Two Ways to Fix a Dent — We'll Recommend the Right One

Parking lot door dings, shopping carts, hail, a basketball hoop that lost the fight with the wind — dents happen. What matters is fixing them the smart way. At Root River Auto Body we do both paintless dent repair (PDR) and conventional dent repair, so our recommendation is based on your dent, not on the only tool we happen to have.

Paintless Dent Repair (PDR)

For smaller dents where the paint is intact, we massage the metal back into shape from behind the panel. Your original factory paint stays untouched — no filler, no repainting, no color-match risk. It's faster and almost always cheaper.

Conventional Dent Repair

Sharp creases, dents on body lines, damage near panel edges, or dents with cracked paint need traditional body work: the metal is straightened, imperfections are filled and sanded, and the panel is refinished with a computerized color match so the repair disappears.

Which Repair Fits Your Dent?

PDR is usually right when...

  • The dent is small to medium (door dings, hail)
  • The paint is not cracked or chipped
  • The dent is on a flat area of the panel, away from edges
  • The back of the panel is accessible

Conventional repair is right when...

  • The metal is creased or stretched
  • Paint is cracked, scraped, or missing
  • The dent sits on a body line or panel edge
  • There are many dents on one panel (severe hail)
  • The panel is aluminum or double-walled with no access

Sometimes replacement beats repair — if a panel is too damaged, a replacement panel, bumper, or fender refinished to match can be the cheaper, better fix. We'll quote it both ways.

Why Fix Dents Sooner Rather Than Later

A dent isn't just cosmetic. Even hairline paint cracks you can't see let moisture reach bare metal — and between Lake Michigan humidity and Milwaukee County road salt, bare metal doesn't stay bare long. It rusts. A $150 ding ignored for two winters can become a rust repair costing several times that.

Dents also hurt resale and trade-in value far beyond their repair cost — dealers see a dinged car and assume neglect.

Hail Damage? We Handle the Claim

Wisconsin hail storms can leave dozens of dents across a hood and roof. Hail damage is typically covered under your comprehensive insurance coverage (usually without raising your rates the way an at-fault collision can). We document every dent, work directly with your insurer, and repair with PDR wherever possible to preserve your factory finish.

Dent Repair FAQs

What is paintless dent repair (PDR)?

PDR uses specialized tools to massage a dent out from behind the panel, preserving your original factory paint. It works best on smaller dents and door dings where the paint isn't cracked. Because there's no filler or repainting, PDR is usually faster and less expensive than conventional repair.

How much does dent repair cost?

Small door dings repaired with PDR often cost well under conventional repair prices. Larger or creased dents that need filler and refinishing cost more because painting is involved. Bring the vehicle to our Franklin shop for a free written estimate — when both repairs are possible, we'll quote both.

Can every dent be fixed without painting?

No. PDR requires intact paint and access behind the panel. Sharp creases, dents on body lines or panel edges, and dents with cracked paint usually need conventional repair with refinishing. We assess each dent honestly and recommend the least expensive repair that will actually look right.

Is a small dent worth fixing?

Usually yes. Dents that crack or stress the paint let moisture reach bare metal, which becomes rust after a Wisconsin winter or two of road salt. Fixing a dent early is far cheaper than fixing rust later.
